How to play Snake

Bring your attention to one round of Snake. Keep collecting apples. Hitting a wall or your body ends the round; filling the entire board wins. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Try a deliberate move

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Keep collecting apples. Hitting a wall or your body ends the round; filling the entire board wins. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Follow this game’s rules rather than another version’s.

Step by step

  1. Press Play to start the movement.
  2. Turn with arrow keys, swipes or the on-screen direction buttons.
  3. Each apple adds ten points and makes the snake longer.
  4. Pause when needed or start a new round.

Controls

Keyboard arrows, swipe gestures or the four direction buttons. Play / pause controls the movement. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

A useful example

When moving right, you may turn up or down, but cannot turn immediately left into your own neck. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Consider the next action carefully.

Watch out for this

The snake continues moving between inputs. Plan a route with space to turn. Compare the situation with the worked example. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
